Strategy and Planning: In this stage current and proposed processes are mapped to existing systems, gaps are identified, and alternatives are reviewed. The implementation approach is chosen, and a timeline is established. Internal and external staffing is selected, and a steering committee is chosen. Key performance indicators and benchmarks are put in place.

Acquisition and Implementation: The tools and/or systems to be utilized to bridge the process and technology gaps are identified and acquired. Prototypes are built, reviewed and selected. Compatibility with existing systems is examined. Full scale solutions are constructed, tested, documented, and delivered. End users and technical support staff are trained.

Maintain and Upgrade: From time to time software vendors will offer or will require that new releases of existing systems be utilized. This drives the analysis of the changes, determination of adoption and timing, the potential acquisition of new tools, and the technical implementation of the newly released software. If the new release results in process changes, training must also be addressed.

Integrate and Optimize: As the business changes, new functionality is desired, or complementary systems are added to the technical landscape the previously implemented systems must be examined to determine their continuity and accuracy in the new environment. Aspects of the prior phases are utilized including gap analysis, staffing, time planning, prototyping, and training.
